Designing the World Around the Characters
Arita's official credit is often reduced to “concept design,” but his own description is more precise. He performed worldview setting, researched architecture, arms, armour and equestrian equipment, then created concept art and production references from that material.
His contribution therefore sits between historical consultant, illustrator and production designer. The goal was not to impose a separate style on Berserk, but to make its world structurally believable for the artists and animators who had to build it.
