EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW

Mitsuhiro Arita

From his early influences to his professional beginnings, Mitsuhiro Arita answers our questions about his journey and his approach to his work.

QUESTION 01

Among the works, artists, films, books or individual pictures you have encountered, have any greatly changed the way you look at drawing?

MITSUHIRO ARITA

At an Alphonse Mucha exhibition, I was overwhelmed by the consistency of his artistic world despite the variety of materials he used, and by the number of his works, as well as by the variety of Hokusai’s subjects and the number of his works.

QUESTION 02

Among your personality traits or personal qualities, are there any that you feel have remained unchanged from your beginnings to the present day?

MITSUHIRO ARITA

Having little ego.

QUESTION 03

Among the advice you have received throughout your life or career, are there any words that still influence your creative practice or your work today?

MITSUHIRO ARITA

Not letting myself be too easily swayed by other people’s advice. Not making choices that I am not personally convinced of.

QUESTION 04

What was your first paid job as an illustrator? If you remember, could you also tell us who commissioned it, when it was and what kind of work it involved?

MITSUHIRO ARITA

When I worked on the maps and characters (including editor development) for a game called ‘Susanoo’, planned by Enix, I was paid for drawing map concept illustrations and other artwork as an assistant to Mutsumi Inomata, who was responsible for character design and the artwork overall.

QUESTION 05

Was there a work or project that prompted you, for the first time, to really step outside your area of expertise and take on something new?

MITSUHIRO ARITA

As a freelancer, if you are not assigned work, your income stops and it is over. To survive, I did every job I was assigned. Even so, I came close to the end many times, but somehow I have managed to survive. I am grateful to the people who gave me work and to everyone who has supported my work.

QUESTION 06

Looking back at your early career, was there a project, encounter or experience that had a particularly significant influence on the path you took afterwards?

MITSUHIRO ARITA

When I told a scenario writer I had met while working on ‘Susanoo’ that I intended to become a software engineer, he said, ‘That would be a shame, when you can draw that well.’ That was what later led me to choose the path of an illustrator.

QUESTION 07

Around when did you start creating pictures using a computer?

MITSUHIRO ARITA

Around 1993.
