Painting the Space ofEarthion

For Ancient's modern Mega Drive shooter, Mitsuhiro Arita did not build the pixel world inside the cartridge. He gave it an identity outside the screen: two painted key visuals conceived in the tradition of monumental Japanese arcade posters.

His Exact Role

Key Art Illustrator — Not Game Designer

Arita's verified contribution is precise: two key art pieces. The first turns the YK-IIA fighter, explosions and orbital space into a sweeping promotional tableau. The commission was publicly announced by Arita himself on 10 May 2025.

That distinction matters. The spacecraft and on-screen graphics appear in his paintings, but available credits do not establish that he designed them. His task was to interpret Earthion's existing world in paint and give the project its public face.

The documented story

A New Game for Old Hardware

Ancient developed Earthion as a new horizontal shoot ’em up running natively on Sega Mega Drive / Genesis hardware. The project combines Makoto Wada’s game direction and pixel art with an original score by Yuzo Koshiro.

Arita Reveals His Commission

Mitsuhiro Arita publicly identified the first image as client work: key art for Ancient’s 16-bit shooter. Koshiro described its ambition as an homage to classic arcade shooting and to the hand-painted posters once displayed on arcade walls.

Two Key Art Pieces

Official soundtrack documentation confirms that Arita created two key art pieces for Earthion. They are not screenshots or spaceship design sheets: they are large promotional compositions that translate the game’s pixel universe into painted spectacle.

Earthion EXA LABEL

The arcade adaptation began operation on exA-Arcadia. Its official product information explicitly credits Mitsuhiro Arita for the key visual, which appears across the arcade poster and kit presentation.

The Artwork Travels

Arita’s imagery was reused on officially licensed physical material, notably the soundtrack packaging. This circulation documents the importance of his key art, but does not turn every jacket, poster or product mock-up into a separate illustration.

A Second View of the Battle

The second painting moves behind the fighter and opens the composition toward Earth, the Moon and a field of enemies. Its reproduction on the official soundtrack jacket confirms how Arita's imagery became a bridge between Earthion's music, its retro hardware and its physical editions.

Only these two images are shown here because they document the full verified illustration commission. Extra photographs of records, cartridges and arcade kits would merely reproduce the same art.
