The origin
From historical research to fantasy history
Arita's entry into Final Fantasy did not come through a conventional game-art portfolio. It came through his work for Shinkigensha: dense reference publications about mythology, weapons, armour and military history. Kenichi Iwao saw those drawings and recognised an artist capable of treating an imaginary setting with the seriousness of documented history.
This origin explains why his Vana'diel illustrations feel different from ordinary promotional art. They often resemble fragments from chronicles, ethnographic studies or remembered events rather than isolated character portraits.
