POLYGON 1993 / ARITA

A special report dedicated to the meeting of two very different visual languages: Mitsuhiro Arita's illustration work and Polygon1993's analog glitch art.

Two Artistic Worlds

ARITA / POLYGON1993

Polygon1993 is a Paris-based visual artist and filmmaker best known for an analog glitch aesthetic built around technological imperfection. His work combines digital imagery with older video technologies, particularly CRT televisions and modified video equipment.

His approach is rooted in the visual language of VHS, cathode-ray screens and electronic hardware associated with the 1980s and 1990s. Rather than attempting to remove image errors, Polygon1993 deliberately uses distortion, interference, signal instability and fragmentation as artistic material.

He has explained that his analog process uses CRT screens and circuit-bent video equipment to alter source images. Through those tools, an image can be stretched, broken, shifted or recomposed through the behaviour of the video signal itself.

This creates a striking contrast with Mitsuhiro Arita's illustration practice. Arita builds an image through drawing, composition, anatomy, colour and movement, while Polygon1993 approaches imagery through electronic distortion and the unpredictable behaviour of analog technology.

Their collaboration therefore brings together two very different creative processes: the precision of an original illustration and the controlled instability of analog glitch art.

Creative Process

WORKING TOGETHER

Their shared work creates a bridge between illustration and experimental video technology. The original image provides character, composition and narrative structure, while Polygon1993's analog process introduces electronic distortion, movement and the unpredictable behaviour of a physical video signal.

The collaboration is therefore less about applying a visual effect to a finished illustration than about allowing two different artistic languages to interact with the same image.
